UNIT 2: WRITING IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES ---- A PROPOSAL
Borrowed from Dr. Collie Fulford
For this assignment, you will write a proposal designed to bring about tangible change in policy or program
development here at NCCU. To do so, you will:
1. Identify and investigate a specific need here at Central that you would like addressed differently than it is
currently.
2. Identify relevant decision makers (Who’s in charge? Who is a local expert on this issue?) and relevant other
stake-holders (who, in addition to you, is affected by the issue?)
3. Write a proposal that:
a. Fully describes a problem at NCCU that could be addressed through changes to (or establishment of) a
program or policy – and fully describes a proposed solution.
b. Shows you are knowledgeable about the issue. This knowledge will be local, from your personal
perspective and observations and gathering of relevant NCCU policy information. But NCCU policy
decision-makers don’t just work from local information. They look for trends and scholarship emerging
from other institutions as they craft and revise policies that affect students. So you will need to both
understand and articulate a broader context of the issue you raise. Working with a librarian will be most
helpful.
c. Argues effectively for the proposed change in policy or program development, convincing the
appropriate decision-makers to accept or fund it.
Due Dates -- POLICY NOTE: On time delivery of a full draft and annotated bibliography are prerequisites for
turning in a final draft. Office consultation with me is also a required component. One-shot “final drafts” earn no
credit.
Wed 10/8 (in-class: Getting started)

to relevant existing policies and/or programs.
