What are the Affects of Sleep Deprivation in College Students?
As a freshman in college I feel that there is just not enough time in the day
to get everything done. My days consist of going to class and studying and
eating when I have time. I am so tired during the day that I have to take one or
two naps daily. I also have to leave time for my social life. It seems impossible to
get the recommended eight to nine hours of sleep. On average I get about five to
six hours of sleep and less on the weekends.
I wanted to know if other students were not getting enough sleep with their
demanding schedules. So I have constructed a survey based on hours of sleep
that random college students are getting. My survey stated that out of ten
students none of them are getting the eight to nine hours of needed sleep. I
found out that the average hours of sleep was 5.5 out of the ten students. My
data was about the same for male and females, freshman to seniors. I did find
out that the people with jobs are getting a little more sleep. This is because they
are using better time management.

What are the Affects of Sleep Deprivation in College Students?

As a freshman in college I feel that there is just not enough time in the day to get everything done. My days consist of going to class and studying and eating when I have time. I am so tired during the day that I have to take one or two naps daily. I also have to leave time for my social life. It seems impossible to get the recommended eight to nine hours of sleep. On average I get about five to six hours of sleep and less on the weekends.

I wanted to know if other students were not getting enough sleep with their demanding schedules. So I have constructed a survey based on hours of sleep that random college students are getting. My survey stated that out of ten students none of them are getting the eight to nine hours of needed sleep. I found out that the average hours of sleep was 5.5 out of the ten students. My data was about the same for male and females, freshman to seniors. I did find out that the people with jobs are getting a little more sleep. This is because they are using better time management.

I wanted to get some information why time management has an effect on the amount of sleep one gets. So I searched the internet and found the website http://homeworktips.about.com/od/timemanagement/a/sleeptime.htm.

Students have many different tasks to complete during the day which seems to keep them up at night. This Mary Carskadon, PhD states that this is from not having good time management and an efficient daily schedule. Carskadon also states that students should keep track of their routines task then make a concrete schedule of all daily tasks. This schedule if followed should leave the student with more hours of sleep. Students’ jobs have set hours so they know when they have to study or do other activities. These students do not have time to procrastinate like other students without jobs.

After reviewing the survey I wanted to know the effects of not getting enough sleep, since only a few people get the recommended amount. So I went to the website http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_deprivation#Effects_of_sleep_deprivation for the answer. I found out that lack of sleep causes blurred vision, slurred speech, memory lapses, memory loss, overall confusion, depression, decreased ability for the immune system to fight off sickness, weight gain, increased blood pressure, aching muscles, faster aging, slowed reaction time, misbehavior, yawning, daytime naps and etc. Lack of sleep also affects the way students perform in the class rooms.

Different Universities are attempting to eliminate sleep deprivation in their students. In the dorms at Indiana University of Pennsylvania the student has very little control over the temperature and noise level. IUP should equip each individual room with its own thermostat. This will help the student be more comfortable. Also each of the rooms should be more sound proof. Noise from the hallways and fellow students can also deprive students of sleep at night. How comfortable a mattress is also effects if a student will get a good night of sleep. If the mattress is to firm mattress pads will solve the problem.

This search helped me to realize that sleep deprivation is a real problem within most college students. There are different ways to eliminate little hours of sleep and I believe it starts with time management. I will write a detailed schedule of my daily task, to help me stay on track and go to sleep at a sufficient time. Hopefully I will get more hours of sleep and perform better in the class room.
