Websites for Lesson Plan
Elementary Science
1. Meteora: NOAA's “Second Life" Island
http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/outreach/sl
A 3-D online world in which virtual “residents" create and build their own
communities.
2. What Lived With Sue?
http://www.fieldmuseum.org/sue/interactive1/sue-whatlivedV3_content.html
This interactive online exhibit from The Field Museum invites visitors to learn about
Sue, “the largest, most complete, and best preserved Tyrannosaurus rex fossil yet
discovered“ by participating in a virtual “dig" at the site where Sue was found.
3. WhaleNet
http://whale.wheelock.edu/Welcome.html
The site includes three separate areas -- for students, teachers, and parents. Each
provides appropriate information, activities, maps, and so on related to whales,
including satellite tagging programs, whale watch programs, “Bring a Whale to
School,” “Adopt a Whale,” and much more. The site also provides complete lessons,
teaching units, and related materials.
4. Planetfesto
http://www.planetfesto.org
Planetfesto is looking for 262,965,120 people to create a virtual (online) ribbon long
enough to wrap around the earth. To create a piece of the ribbon, choose one of the
images at the site or upload your own, explain why you love the planet, and what
you're personally going to do to protect it. Or just watch the ribbon scroll by. A lesson
plan also is available.
5. The BioSUB Project
http://www.biosub.com.au
Marine biologist Lloyd Godson will sustain himself underwater for 14 days in the
world’s first self-sufficient underwater habitat, BioSUB. In the BioSUB project,
Godson will need to create his own oxygen (through processes developed by
students), grow food, obtain fresh water, produce power (with a stationary bike) and
manage waste. Students and adults can view Godson’s habitat and participate in live
classes conducted by Godson.
