Student Spotlight …. Dana Hanratty
Dana Hanratty is a vibrant and articulate young lady who tutors at Edison
High School. Alt houg h Dana is an E nglish tutor, s he help s her stude nts with so
much more. Dana can oftentimes be heard discussing a variety of topics that
have to do with college and career options. She always goes the extra mile for
her students. For example, Dana visits the Financial Aid office here at the
College to pick up forms that her students need to complete, and she will even
make sure that the appropriate forms are mailed! She has helped her students
with their applications to the College, their FAFSA forms, and she is even
helping them to complete applications for various college scholarships. Dana is
truly dedicated to her students and helping them succeed in their future
endeavors.
As for career aspirations, Dana graduated from Community College of
Philadelphia this semester and is planning to attend Temple University this fall.
Her major will be Elementary Education. She would love to teach Special
Education classes. After she earns her bachelor’s degree at Temple, she
hopes to earn a master’s degree in school psychology and become a school
counselor.
When Dana was asked about her Tech Prep tutoring experience this year,
she said the following: “My tutoring experience has been a thrill, with many
good days and a few trying days. However, I wouldn’t trade it for the world! To
all of my students: Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of your high
school experience, and I wish nothing but the very best for you!”
Here are some tips for first-time
and returning college students:
Be sure to attend your
college summer orientation. This
gives you an opportunity to get
familiar with the campus and get
help with any questions you may
have about college courses,
financial aid, placement testing,
and the registration process.
Create a budget with your parents
that includes what will be covered
by financial aid and how much
your parents will provide. Your
budget should include tuition,
books, transportation, clothing,
etc.
Once your budget is complete,
subtract the grants and
scholarships that you have been
awarded (get your award letter
from your college). Then you will
be able to determine how much
you and your parents need to
contribute or if you need to apply
for any student or parent plus
loans.
Do an honest self-appraisal of
your strengths, weaknesses,
and goals for the upcoming
semester. Set up a game plan
to overcome any struggles you
may have.
Make a check list of materials
you may need to prepare for
college.
Get a summer job and save
your money for items you may
need to purchase while you are
attending college.
