Inside of foldable Front Back Notes: a claim is something you propose to be true, based on evidence -Nick is a good person. (This is debatable, but I could support this claim with evidence.) a symbol is something that represents something greater than its literal meaning -a wedding ring is more than just a round piece of metal. It represents love and commitment. You may not use this, but an example of a symbol from The Great Gatsby would be Daisy’s name. A Daisy is a delicate, beautiful white flower with a yellow center. White often symbolizes purity and innocence, which is how Gatsby views Daisy in the novel. The yellow inside is symbolic of the golden memory of Daisy, from 5 years ago, that Gatsby holds on to. That golden memory is the center of everything for Gatsby.

Note to Teacher: You will need poster paper for this. I have found that 17 by 11 works best. Pages 1 &2- Student Handout (breaks down the assignment with clear instructions) Page 3- Grading Rubric (it breaks it down enough to where a good TA can actually grade them for you) About the assignment: They must describe the setting, make a claim about Gatsby, identify a symbol, and describe an important moment in the novel thus far. For each of these, they must will have 3 tasks: illustrations, claims/explanations, and textual evidence. I used this with my 11th graders (grade-level) and found that it was effective. I will actually be creating a second one for chapters 6-9 to explore themes and more symbols. *** You may want to change requirements from 3-5 sentences to 5-7 sentences depending on your class's ability.
