Chemistry Department SLO Improvement Plan S’09
CHEMISTRY 211 Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
1. Demonstrate proficiency in drawing Lewis structures and determining the characteristics of alkanes and alkenes; naming alkanes,
cycloalkanes and alkenes and drawing Newman projections of alkanes.
Measure: Exam #1
2. Demonstrate proficiency in predicting the stability of carbocations, writing the reaction mechanisms and formulas of the products of the
reactions of alkanes and alkenes and determining the stereochemistry of chiral alkanes.
Measure: Exam #2
3. Demonstrate proficiency in determining the characteristics of alkynes and naming and writing the reaction mechanisms and formulas of the
products of the reactions of alkynes, using IR spectroscopy in structure determination and predicting if a reaction proceeds by an SN1 or an
SN2 reaction mechanism.
Measure: Exam #3
4. Demonstrate proficiency in determining if a reaction proceeds by an E1 or an E2 reaction mechanism; naming, writing the reaction
mechanisms and formulas of the products of the reactions of alcohols, ethers, epoxides and organometallic compounds; calculating the
reaction energies of the halogenation of alkanes and using UV spectroscopy in structure determination.
Measure: Exam #4

SLO2 had the highest “below standard” percentage of all Chem 211 SLOs. Exam 2 (SLO2) is typically more rigorous than Exam 1 (SLO1), due to the fact that Exam 1 covers material that may be review for some students, depending on their background. Make Exam 1 reflect the rigor of the rest of the course more, i.e. make Exam 1 more challenging for all students. Write Exam 1, so that fewer review- type material is included, thus better reflecting the rigor of the subsequent exams. Implement in Fall 2009 Covers the single lecture section. Jens-Uwe Kuhn None
