Social Stratification

  • Social stratification, on a large scale, is a system by which a society ranks categories of people in a hierarchy.- First step is for society to categorize people- Second step, rank which is based on 4 basic principles- Ranking is a trait of society, not simply a reflection of individual values- Social stratification carries over from one generation to another, as does wealth and poverty- Social stratification is universal but variable--different all around the world TERM 10

Caste System

DEFINITION 10

  • Based on ascription or birth--farming societies- A pure caste system is based upon birth alone and therefore it is a closed system- In India Caste position guides a person's life Each caste performs one type of work People marry within their own caste Caste beliefs shape members' beliefs Guides everyday life, social control, by keeping people in the company of their own kind

Marx, Weber

  • Conflict theorist. Disenfranchised by the capitalist system. "How in a society so rich, so many could be so poor?"- Social stratification based upon a person's relationship to the means of production Own productive property (capitalist) Sell labor to others (proletarians) Marx believed they had opposing interests
  • Capitalism would bring about its own down fall. Worker's revolution- Marx envisioned a system that met the needs of all, not just a select few--socialism TERM 17

  • Gender refers to the personal traits and social positions that members of society attach to being female or male- Gender in its most basic form is a dimension of social organizationJust like all systems of stratification, it is a way of categorizing and ranking- Hierarchy, placing men and women in different positions of power, wealth, and other resources TERM 18
