VC 237 :: Week 08 1 of 2 17 November 2008
— Personal Web Site Final Project —
Assignment ::
For the final project in this class, create a small personal Web site for yourself. The style, design, coloration, and page content are all up to you. Don’t think of this as a portfolio site—this is something much less formal than that. Have fun with the design and content, making it as plain or complex as you would like.
An individual review of your interface design is due on or before Wednesday, November 26th (Week 09), and the completed final project is due on Tuesday, December 9th (Finals Week).
Required Pages ::
Your site must consist of the following five pages.
A Home page with a description of the site. A Biography page which must include a biography of yourself (which may be fictional) and a photo of yourself. Some of the information from your résumé could reside on this page, but don’t treat this page as a résumé. A Gallery page which includes a minimum of 9 images with captions. Use of a thumbnail > full-size image layout is one option here. A Favorites page, which include at least five external links. A Contact page with an e-mail link to your e-mail (fake e-mail address and contact info is OK).
Design Requirements ::
Your Web pages must meet the following design criteria:
Target monitor resolution for the design is 1024x768 pixels (note this is different than the actual design dimensions). Design should be created in Photoshop first, then sliced, optimized, and re- assembled in Dreamweaver. (If you choose to use a different method—perhaps doing all design in Dreamweaver—please let me know ahead of time) Every page must use a consistent design based upon a common template. Use non-default colors and styling for links (both normal and hover states).
Use rollover images or text-based CSS rollovers for the navigational buttons. Each page must have a appropriate Page Title (the
Each page must include at least one additional image, other than the header and navigational buttons. An unordered list (

— Personal Web Site Final Project —
Technical Requirements ::
Images must be saved in the appropriate file format and compressed using the optimizations methods discussed in class. Images must be located in a folder labeled images or art. No dead links or missing images. Pages and images are saved in the correct specified folder on the CCCVC Web server, and views error-free.
The file name of the Home page should be index.html Files have appropriate names. Optional but recommended: Site pages are created using Dreamweaver Templates.
Example Sites ::
Our own Wayne Knowles created a sample site many moons ago. Be sure to ignore the instructions on the Home page—they are a different this year. http://newterra.chemeketa.edu/faculty/knolz/vc237/w01_91_final_site_example/ You can browse student work from last Fall in this directory: http://www.cccvc.com/vc237/hoelterp/fall2007/
Dates & Deliverables ::
Web site pages should meet the criteria listed above, demonstrate thoughtfulness in page layout and design, image optimization, and show precision in image slicing and in Dreamweaver layout. Final HTML layout should look reasonably similar to the original Photoshop designs and display without significant visual errors when viewed online in a Web browser (we will use Safari and Firefox on Mac OS X 10.5 in class).
All project files, including Photoshop files containing your slices and the HTML, CSS and artwork files in our local root folder of your site, should be uploaded to the VC Web server, into a directory called final in your personal directory on the server. Be sure to upload your site prior the beginning of class for (error-free) viewing via the www.cccvc.com/vc237 Web server we have used all throughout the quarter.
There will be a review of your interface design on Wednesday, November 26th, 2008 (Week 09) during class. You will not need to turn in the design files—we will just be reviewing in class your design in preparation for slicing and assembly the following week. Hitting this project milestone (either on the date or prior to it) is worth 10% (20 points) of your final project grade.
The completed Final Project is due on Tuesday, December 9th, 2008 (Finals Week; 4:00 PM–6:00 PM). Since there is no final exam in this class, you will be presenting your final project to your fellow classmates during class.
This project is worth 200 points.
