There are several elements to the required project for STA100.
1. After clearly identifying the population you’d like to know more about you should
have a reasonable and well thought out question that you’d like to answer. Some
examples:
a. Do college men and women have the same mean score on the LOT test?
b. Is the ratio of the length of the femur to that of the humerus the same for
men as for women?
c. Is there a linear relationship between GPA at the end of the freshman year
and that upon graduation?
d. Is the proportion of SUNYIT students who voted in the last election
greater than 40%?
2. You should clearly think through your data collection methods. The methods we
are studying in class depend upon simple random sampling. This is very difficult
to achieve in practice but as researchers we try to come as close as possible.
3. You will be applying the techniques learned in class, and in particular those of
chapters 9 (hypothesis testing), 10 (regression), and 11 (contingency and RxC
tables). Make sure that your data is susceptible to analysis using these methods
(i.e. SRS, normal populations when required, independent samples when required,
etc.)
4. You write up should be professional: clear, well organized, done on a word
processor. In particular, you should have:
a. A title page showing the members of the team, the question you sought to
answer, and a brief abstract of your methods and results.
b. Starting on the second page, describe your project in some detail: where
did you collect your data and under what circumstances? Is your data
nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio? What is your method of analysis: t test?
Regression? Chi-Square? Etc. Also describe how you used SPSS to
perform the data analysis.
c. Finally, on the last page, print out the data you collected and used in your
analysis.
