The module provides an overview of historical, current and emerging perspectives in public health designed to equip students with a broad understanding of evolving practice. It considers local, national and global issues, with a particular focus on the role of social inequality on health inequalities, and on the practical assessment of population health needs. Throughout the module, students will be introduced to a variety of theoretical models and practical approaches, and provided with the opportunity to evaluate their use in a variety of contexts.
AIMS
On successful completion of the module, a student will be able to:
INDICATIVE CONTENT The origins and principles of public health will be explored and evaluated and the conceptual, theoretical and philosophical frameworks that underpin modern public health practice will be examined in detail. The module will also address the principles and practice of health needs assessment.
Course content includes:
The approach to teaching and learning is online with instructors proactively seeking to promote a student-centred approach. Emphasis is placed on linking theory to the student’s area of interest, and debate will be encouraged via group discussions in virtual learning communities.
