RATIONALE
The module provides an overview of historical, current and emerging perspectives in public health
designed to equip students with a broad understanding of evolving practice. It considers local,
national and global issues, with a particular focus on the role of social inequality on health
inequalities, and on the practical assessment of population health needs. Throughout the module,
students will be introduced to a variety of theoretical models and practical approaches, and provided
with the opportunity to evaluate their use in a variety of contexts.
AIMS
1. To provide students with a critical understanding of the historical context and current trends
in public health practice.
2. To introduce and critique key public health theories that engage with the determinants of
health and health inequalities.
3. To engage with current public health initiatives at a local, national and global levels.
4. To explore the purpose and process of health needs assessments in planning and
commissioning public health services that are appropriate to their setting.

RATIONALE

The module provides an overview of historical, current and emerging perspectives in public health designed to equip students with a broad understanding of evolving practice. It considers local, national and global issues, with a particular focus on the role of social inequality on health inequalities, and on the practical assessment of population health needs. Throughout the module, students will be introduced to a variety of theoretical models and practical approaches, and provided with the opportunity to evaluate their use in a variety of contexts.

AIMS

  1. To provide students with a critical understanding of the historical context and current trends in public health practice.
  2. To introduce and critique key public health theories that engage with the determinants of health and health inequalities.
  3. To engage with current public health initiatives at a local, national and global levels.
  4. To explore the purpose and process of health needs assessments in planning and commissioning public health services that are appropriate to their setting.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of the module, a student will be able to:

  1. Evaluate the concept of public health, and critically explore political and ethical issues relating to modern public health practice.
  2. Understand and critically analyse the relationship between social inequality and health inequalities.
  3. Discuss and critically appraise the role of local, national and international public health programmes, health directives and health initiatives.
  4. Demonstrate a critical understanding, knowledge and ability to conduct a health needs assessment in supporting evidence-based public health practice.

INDICATIVE CONTENT The origins and principles of public health will be explored and evaluated and the conceptual, theoretical and philosophical frameworks that underpin modern public health practice will be examined in detail. The module will also address the principles and practice of health needs assessment.

Course content includes:

  • The history and development of public health
  • Examples of public health issues and how they are addressed
  • Organisational foundations of historical and current public health practice
  • Quality and efficacy in public health practice
  • The social construction of health and illness including lay and professional, individual and population concepts
  • The social and biological determinants of health and inequalities in health
  • Appropriate approaches for targeting populations, communities and individuals to reduce health inequalities
  • Public health contribution to commissioning health care services
  • Health needs assessment, sources of health status information, their interpretation and utilisation in public health practice and health impact assessment.
  • Introduction to best practice principles in public health via health impact analysis (assessing the health impacts of policies, plans and projects).

LEARNING AND TEACHING METHODS

The approach to teaching and learning is online with instructors proactively seeking to promote a student-centred approach. Emphasis is placed on linking theory to the student’s area of interest, and debate will be encouraged via group discussions in virtual learning communities.
