LICENSED VOCATIONAL NURSE (LVN)
DEFINITION
Under the supervision of the assigned administrator and under the professional direction of a
California credentialed district School Nurse, the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) will travel to
various school sites within the District and perform a wide variety of nursing duties; perform
specialized health care procedures on students; conduct hearing screenings, and ensure compliance
with State laws and District policies. The LVN shall also do other job related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Administers blood pressure monitoring, catheterization, diabetic monitoring, gastrostomy
tube
feeding method, gastrostomy tube reinsertion, intravenous medication and infusion
(with tube in
place), siliastic catheterization, Central Venous Line site care, feeding or
medicating,
mechanical ventilation, ostomy care, oxygen administration, postural
drainage and percussion,
respiratory assistance with inhaler or mechanical nebulizer,
tracheotomy care including cleaning,
suctioning and tube replacement; ensures all specialized health care procedures are provided
under specified written
provisions approved by physician and district school nurse with the
parent's written consent; administers prescribed medications according to instructions and district
policies; administers emergency health care plan as designated by the district school nurse,
parent and physician; communicates with the district school nurse any observed medical
conditions of the assigned
student(s); participates in IEP meetings as appropriate; records
appropriate medical procedures daily, as directed; provides staff with current information
regarding specific health problems of their
students; coordinates and consults with district
nurse regarding first aid and emergency care of assigned
student(s); coordinates and
participates in routine in-service training as required; consults with staff regarding health
information as needed; demonstrates and models safe, prudent work behaviors and practices that
result in a
safe and healthy environment; conducts routine screening procedures; performs other
related duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Special program goals and objectives, general concepts of child development and characteristics
of children with special needs;
Skills and abilities in vocational nursing functions including but not limited to; first aid, CPR,
administration of
medications, specialized health care procedures and techniques, health and
safety regulations, operation of specialized medical equipment, signs and symptoms of
child abuse,
infection control procedures, hazardous waste management, and record
keeping and reporting
requirements;
Modern medical terminology, i.e. catheterization, equipment and techniques;
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy;
Public health agencies and local health care resources;
Universal health precautions, proper techniques for handling and disposing of hazardous
materials.
Ability to:
Communicate effectively one-on-one and in small groups;
Exercise judgment in dealing with emergencies and special health needs;

Perform specialized health procedures for students according to established protocol and other health related procedures; Handle emergency situations calmly and effectively; Use discretion in handling confidential records; Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff and other health care professionals and the general public, including effective communication in oral and written form and strong interpersonal skills; Operate a computer; Effectively record data and information and establish files, records, reports, and referrals; Conduct hearing screenings, and assist in screening students for vision, dental and immunizations; Work independently with little direction, including travel to various school sites within the District and perform a wide variety of nursing duties; Relate effectively with racially and ethnically diverse staff, students and community.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education: High School graduate or equivalent, proof required; Graduation from an accredited Vocational Nurse Training program.

Experience: One year of nursing experience working with medically fragile children or adults; or any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.

REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES

Possession of a valid State of California License of Vocational Nursing Possess and maintain a valid First Aid Certificate and cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification Possess a California Audiometrist Certificate Possess and maintain a valid and appropriate California Driver’s License Willingness to use own vehicle

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Strength: Able to lift and/or carry up to fifty (50) pounds; push and pull objects weighing up to forty (40) pounds; able to hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels); able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, walk; sit for sustained periods of time, kneel or squat for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate assigned machines and equipment; use of proper body mechanics; visual ability to read handwritten or typed documents and the display screens of various office equipment and machines.

Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily in the classroom or restroom facility environment. The job may require moving from school to school during the day. This is physically demanding work and may include possible exposure to body fluids, communicable diseases, assaultive behaviors, and other physically demanding conditions.
