  1. Provide a brief biographical overview of each individual’s life. Include the dates of birth and death, if known. Carlos Slim is Mexico’s richest person and he and his family control Telemex, Grupo Carso, and América Móvil which is Latin America’s biggest mobile telecom firm. Further, he owns a 17% stake in the New York Times, Mexican construction companies, consumer goods, mining, and real estate companies^1. He is 82 years old and was born January 28th, 1940^2. He has an educational background in civil engineering and is best known as a businessman, investor, and philanthropist. He is currently worth over $88 billion, and his holdings account for over 40% of the listings on the Mexican Stock Exchange^3. Growing up, his father would give him a 5-pso allowance while requiring him to record his purchases in a ledger and prior to going into business he was a professor of algebra for university in Mexico City^4. He was luckily enough however that his father made a great fortune during the Mexican Revolution from 1910-1920^5 , which surely helped him get a start.
  2. Explain how and why this person was an innovative leader. What did he or she achieve? In what ways did his or her success influence, and was influenced by, by the world outside his or her origin country? Carlos is an innovative leader because he started from nothing and self-made himself into the 16 th^ richest person in the world. Once he found his niche in stock trading he didn’t stop. Amassing interests in fields of communications, insurance, construction, energy, mining, retailing, publishing, and finance^6. He utilized the economic crash in Mexico during 1982 to purchase controlling interests in many different companies and with his expertise and management effectiveness his was able to substantially increase their value, and his.

Zachary Lewis His ownership of Telemex allowed him to have access to invest outside Mexico and enter markets that would be able to bring him wealth and influence. This approach then allowed him to grow further and eventually start América Móvil which became one of the largest telecommunication companies in the world^7. He utilized his keen eye and business acumen to purchases companies all over the world. This broadened his approach and allowed for him to gain new footings into different regions that were far outside his “local” area. He invested in countries all through L.A. in Colombia, Nicaragua, Peru, Chile, Honduras, El Salvdor, and even into America with Microsoft^8.

  1. Find and include a quote from this leader that you think tells us something about who this person was. If you cannot find a quote from the actual person, find a quote from someone else about this person. I have two quotes in my research on him that I think describe him well and proves why he’s been so successful in life. “Competition makes you better, always, always makes you better, even if the competitor wins.^9 This quote shows me that no matter win or lose Carlos was looking to improve and grow and utilize both outcomes to improve himself and his position in life and business. I think this speaks highly to this class as well in a global sense that competition is everywhere, and best use it to improve yourself, your leadership style, or company no matter the outcome. Another quote of Carlos’ that I really enjoyed is “Mistakes are normal and human. Make them small, accept them, correct them, and forget them.^10 ” I try to live by a similar approach in life and business as well. To succeed as a leader, you must be willing to make mistakes and allow your team to make them as well. If not, they’ll constantly be striving for perfection and afraid to act for fear of failure or retribution.

Zachary Lewis follow in her shoes. She consistently has set an exemplary example for any executive to follow, man or woman for that matter. Her positions within PepsiCo have allowed her to influence positively those outside of L.A. as well. She was recognized by the World Economic Forum in 2020 for “Exceptional Women of Excellence” award. Finally, she was won the Catalyst Practices Recognition in New York, which distinguishes innovative initiatives focused on recruitment, development, and promotion of women in business.^11

  1. Find and include a quote from this leader that you think tells us something about who this person was. If you cannot find a quote from the actual person, find a quote from someone else about this person. A quote I very much enjoyed reading in my time researching Paula was when she was asked ‘‘ what is it about the position of being CEO that most attracts you?” and she replied, “The possibility of creating growth.”^13 This is a simple answer to a simple question, but the part I admire is that she doesn’t overthink the role that she plays. She could have easily given a very elongated response to what attracts her or what it means, but it shows you her vision or destiny is growth and to make the company better. Daniel Servitje Montull, Member of the Board & Chairman, Grupo Bimbo https://grupobimbo-com-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/s3fs-public/miembros-2020/ServitjeDaniel.jpg?VersionId=z7T00tUVRfIvQxKpvcnARNajyHdoLBAg
  2. Provide a brief biographical overview of each individual’s life. Include the dates of birth and death, if known.

Zachary Lewis Daniel S. Montull was born in Mexico City in 1959, and he began working for Bimbo, a company was co-founded by his father and uncle, in 1982. He earned his MBA from Stanford University (1987) and worked his way up to CEO of Group Bimbo in 2007 and Presided and CEO since 2013^14. His work has helped grow into the US markets starting in 2002, and from there on it was a race and gobble up effort to be worldwide. According to Forbes he’s accumulated over $3.5 billion in net worth^16.

  1. Explain how and why this person was an innovative leader. What did he or she achieve? In what ways did his or her success influence, and was influenced by, by the world outside his or her origin country? He has been paramount and responsible for Bimbo’s expansion into the US, Europe, and Asia markets. Taking what was a regional bakery company and now having it operate in 33 countries with annual revenues north of $15 billion^14. His work has helped to grow Bimbo considerably. They have acquired more than 100 brands worldwide in 22 different countries allowing them to amass 171 production facilities and the title of world’s largest bakery company. Further supplanting himself as an innovative leader and world influence, he didn’t let the Covid- 19 pandemic slow down the efforts of Bimbo. Through his efforts and leadership, they saw a 21% increase during the first half of 2020, and before that in 2011 they became a major sponsor of an MLS club. He used his time and efforts in California getting his MBA to pave the way to eventually bring part of the business stateside. He was the leader to bring sales routes to Los Angeles starting in 1987^15 , and later in life used that same spirit and tenacity to cross the globe expanding their footprint and producing success after success. With his leadership, Bimbo has a resounding track record of expansion in growth in all corners of globe and they do it by partnering and creating relationships with the communities they help feed^17.
  2. Find and include a quote from this leader that you think tells us something about who this person was. If you cannot find a quote from the actual person, find a quote from someone else about this person. A quote that describes Daniel well and pertains to his approach to leadership as the CEO was “it’s [sic] like marathon runners; you have to know that this entails working along many kilometers, of a lot of travelling and requiring an understanding that you have to do things balancing them up with our personal life, as well as having a team of co-workers with the capacity to assume their own responsibilities and work in a team.^18 I really like his approach to this because in leadership, as well as life, it’s not a sprint even if it feels like it. His approach to treating it like a distance race, relying on the team, and being able to take a step back was refreshing to think about as I picture a CEO working 24/7/365.
