Heart Rate Calculation: Finding Your Target Zone - Prof. Joseph Coti, Lab Reports of Physical Education and Motor Learning

Instructions on how to calculate your heart rate and determine your target heart rate zone for cardio training. It includes steps for finding your pulse, counting beats, and calculating beats per minute (bpm) using the 10-second method. Additionally, it explains how to calculate your maximum heart rate (mhr) based on age and gender, and provides formulas for determining the low and high ends of your target heart rate zone.

PHED 103 – CALCULATING YOUR HEART RATE
Monitoring Your Heart Rate
1. Find your pulse at either your Radial (wrist) or Carotid (neck) artery.
2. At the signal “go” begin counting your pulse for ten seconds.
3. At the signal “stop” end counting.
4. Write the number of beats here__________.
5. To calculate BPM (beats per minute) multiply by 6.
10 second count _________ x 6 = _________ BPM
Maximum Heart Rate
MHR is the most your heart can beat for your given age. This can vary slightly
between individuals depending on level of physical fitness and gender.
Formula: 220 – Age = MHR
220 - ________ = ______
Calculating Target Heart Rate
The THR Zone (target heart rate) for cardio training is between 60-85% of ones’
MHR.
Formula: MHR x .6 = 60% or low end of THR zone.
____________ x .6 = __________
Formula: MHR x .85 = 85% or high end of THR zone.
____________ x .85 = __________
During cardio training you want to achieve a heart rate within your THR
zone.
My target zone is from low end of _________ BPM to _________ BPM.
