CHEM 111 Fall 2008 LAB EXAM REVIEW Lab exam will take place during the regular lab time, 8-11 December 2008 The following skills are required for the lab exam:
. proper use of graduated cylinders, pipettes, balances, rulers to measure volume, weight (mass), and length . working knowledge of metric system including the unit conversion: (MEMORIZE the meaning of the following prefixes in metric system: kilo-, centi-, milli-. MEMORIZE the following relationships between metric units: 1 km = 1000 m; 1 m = 100 cm; 1 m = 1000 mm; 1 cm = 10 mm; 1 L = 1000 mL; 1 kg = 1000 g . correct use of significant figures in calculations . measurements and calculations related to density of rectangular objects, irregular objects (the volume displacement method), and liquids . writing lab report . measurements and calculations related to the preparation of solutions with a given molarity (M) and % w/w, % w/v, % v/v concentrations . calculations related to dilutions
. determining names and formulas of the compounds . writing balanced chemical equations, especially acid-base neutralization reactions and hydrocarbon combustion reactions . calculating the amount of reactants and products in chemical reactions including the limiting reactant and the percent yield . calculations related to acid-base titrations . calculating heat produced in chemical reactions Review for the lab exam:
