Final Exam Study Guide
Spring 2008
The final exam is scheduled for Thursday May 8, 3:45- 6:45. You will have the entire exam time,
but the exam is designed similar to the midterm and should take about 75 minutes.
Like the midterm, the form of the exam is multiple choice (12 items at 1 point each), definition
(3 items at 2 points each), and short answer (4 items at 8 points each). The test is worth a total
of 50 points.
Items chosen for definition are major, key terms. Short answer items ask for responses that are
from 1-2 paragraphs in length.
All exam materials are provided. And, either pen or pencil is OK.
The exam covers:
o chapters 5, 6, & 9 in Haslett & Samter,
o chapters 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 10, & 14 in Van Evra,
o class lecture slides since midterm exam
Preparation Suggestions
Identify high-frequency, key terms from the readings and slides, and become familiar with their
definitions. For example, words like: social cognition (HS5), scaffolding (HS 6), media literacy
(VE 14) and more are good candidates for test items.
Review each chapter in order to be able to explain the general ideas of its content to a lay
audience. For example:
o What are the stages of development of children’s communication knowledge? What
kinds of messages might children be able to produce and understand at these different
stages? (HS 5)
o How does letting children view television affect development of children’s gendered,
sexual, and cultural identities? (HS5, VE6 & 10).
o Explain how preschool children learn about social communication using Dodge’s model
(HS 5).
o How might parents increase children’s communication abilities concerning consumer
behaviors (e.g., advertising literacy, talking about money, etc).
o Summarize how modeling theory, cognitive neoassociationists theory, script theory,
habituation and desensitization theory to explain children’s aggressive behaviors after
exposure to violent programming. (VE 5).
Good Luck… and keep thinking positively.
