(a) Adopting a systematic environmental management system is beneficial to a company because it provides a structured approach, encourages continual improvement and assists legal compliance, but what advantages and disadvantages are there in adopting a certified environmental management system (EMS). (12 marks)
(b) Discuss the features you would expect to see in an effective plan for an environmental management programme. (22 marks)
(a) Explain the generic categories into which waste reduction measures may be classified. Illustrate your explanation with examples. (12 marks)
(b) Organisational issues are recognised as potential barriers to waste reduction programmes in enterprises. Discuss the character of these barriers and possible measures to overcome them. (22 marks)
(a) Discuss the characteristics you would seek when assessing the quality of a corporate sustainability report. (22 marks)
(b) Irish Water has been established to manage the supply of potable water in the state. What sustainability indicators (environmental, economic, social) would you expect to find if Irish Water were to publish a sustainability report in the future? (12 marks)
(a) What topics must be addressed by a regional Waste Management Plan? ( 8 marks)
(b) Explain the distinction between waste licences, waste collection permits and waste facility permits. Illustrate your answer with examples of relevant activities. (12 marks)
(c) A small-scale yoghurt manufacturer discharges its effluent direct to a stream. It also sends its (non-hazardous) waste to landfill. What steps must it undertake to ensure environmental legal compliance for its manufacturing operations in relation to effluent and waste? (14 marks)
