Mona Lisa painted in 16th century is among the greatest treasure of renaissance
time period. The original painting by Leonardo da Vinci is valued for more than 1 billion
dollars. Currently it is placed at Louvre along with many paintings of Renaissance time
period. This piece of art has been able to capture human imagination for many centuries
now. It is considered as one of the finest examples of portrait art ever made. The painting
is referred as La Gioconda by Italians while French refer to it as La Joconde. These terms
can also help to differentiate the original copy versus many variants brought by artists,
some of which are even brought today (Carrier, 2006)..
Leonardo da Vinci never used to sign or give date over his paintings. All of his
work has neither date nor signature. The details of Mona Lisa are known more from
biography of Leonardo, which was written by Giorgio Vasari, who was a painter himself.
The biography mentioned that Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo di Vinci. This was
done by Leonardo as part of his agreement to paint Lisa Gherardini. She was the wife of
Francesco del Giocondo who was a wealthy silk merchant from Florentine. Giorgio also
mentioned that Leonardo used musicians while painting Lisa which possibly explained
the beautiful smile of Lisa. The biography further pointed that Leonardo took 20 years to
complete the picture attributing it to laziness of the painter.

The portrait styled art showed the subject being upright and looking straight into the eyes of viewer. This posture was artistic in itself and used the subject face and chest to be turned at right angles. Some say the posture was derived from ‘Pyramid’ image and by using golden mean measurements. In the painting Lisa has left arm on armrest while her right hand crossed the front. The position of her arms, armrests and other elements have been kept in such a way so that viewer thinks there is a distance between Lisa and her background. The landscape used was aerial perspective in the painting providing smoky blues with no clear end. This was done to provide a sense of depth and surreal atmosphere. We can notice another surreal effect in the painting. Mona Lisa does not have eyebrows and eyelashes. Though this abnormal aspect has not been put by the painter. If we take a closer view of the painting then we can find that eyebrows and eyelashes were originally painted but the oil painting has vanished over time, may be due to regular cleaning Mona Lisa is a masterpiece of Leonardo and it shows the immense contribution of Leonardo to oil paintings. The common painting technology trick of tonal gradations was used in the paintings to provide it smooth flow (Bodkin, 2019). The painting is known for its air of mystery and serenity. The great soothing view comes from the tonality of landscape, the scheme of the color and harmony created between history and present with use of pyramid shaped pose. The mystery in the painting also comes from the lady half smile which she seems to be looking at the viewer. The hands seemed to be though lifeless at the same time. That gave an impression that those hands belonged to a different body.

Duchamp was known for his hilarious moves and takes on art. So, his tinkering of Mona Lisa was seen in similar spirit. Though a popular artist his move soon became trend and people began to draw their own Mona Lisa art using existing Mona Lisa portraits. It was considered by some as disrespect of art, but Duchamp took the movement off by his popularity. Mona Lisa by Fernando Botero Mona Lisa by Fernando Botero was painted in 1977. This art showed Mona Lisa as a fat lady who was suffering from obesity. This artist has painted weight to many famous portraits before. It was said that the author wanted to show that obesity was not a problem and so he used to use many celebrities’ photos to make such attempt. Mr. Fernando Botero use of Mona Lisa in 1977 was highly appreciated as a cute portrait of a ‘fat Mona Lisa’. This painting was first time that an artist had taken liberty to paint Mona Lisa fat. The attempt did become hit in market and the Botero was credited for reigniting the movement to edit and have fun with existing art. In all the paintings done, Leonardo Di Vinci stands out as an individual who created an art which lives and thereby has also been useful for entertainment purposes.
