Cover Letter Outline Assignment
Learning Objectives:
To create a strong cover letter, it is important to connect your skills and experience to the job description and organization
you are applying with. This step helps tailor your application to be seen as a stronger applicant to recruiters and Applicant
Tracking Systems. It also showcases that you took time to personalize your cover letter and focus on how you can help
“them.”
This assignment is designed to:
Assist you in writing a strong cover letter by thinking through the questions a cover letter should answer
Provide a framework when preparing for interviews and networking opportunities
Assignment:
1. Fill out the worksheet in its entirety with detailed thoughts.
2. Before you begin, review the cover letter assignment instructions. For your cover letter assignment, you MUST
tailor your cover letter to the job posting/description that you used for your Employer Analysis assignment.
3. Submit the completed worksheet to Canvas to be graded
Grading:
You will be graded on successful completion of the worksheet (complete/incomplete) which includes answering ALL
questions with appropriate and professional responses that display your research and reflection.
Step 1 – Choose Your Focus
1. Refer to the Employer Analysis assignment you completed during Week 1 of BSAD 333
2. Review the keywords and qualifications you highlighted in the job description and choose the top THREE (3) that
you want to discuss within your cover letter
Keyword or Job Qualification #1 Attention to detail
Keyword or Job Qualification #2 Basic Microsoft office skills
Keyword or Job Qualification #3 Problem- solving and communication skills.
Step 2 – Develop a Strong Thesis Statement
Cover Letter Tip: Your thesis statement should be in your introduction paragraph. It also outlines what to discuss in
your body paragraphs. The thesis statement and content of your body paragraphs should match up.
*FYI - It is also okay to discuss other attributes and skills about yourself throughout your cover letter!
Instructions:
1. Your thesis is one sentence that tells the reader which skills you’ll be discussing in the cover letter
2. Mention the 3 job qualifications/keywords you highlighted in Step 1, (which can be skills, experience or both) in
your statement
3. Make sure it is to the point and not overly wordy
Thesis Statement: As an assistant and finance student with a strong eye for detail and proficiency in Excel, I am an
ideal candidate for this position due to my ability to analyze financial data effectively.
