Course Description :

A basic yet comprehensive study of living organisms, including the principles of structure and function at the molecular, cellular and organismal levels. CHM130 or one year of high school chemistry is recommended.

Learning Outcome Statements:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Describe and apply the fundamentals of science.
  2. Describe and relate the characteristics of life.
  3. Describe and apply basic chemistry concepts.
  4. Apply the principles of classification.
  5. Describe cell membrane structures and functions.
  6. Describe the basic cell structures and functions.
  7. Describe and apply the fundamentals of cellular energies.
  8. Describe and analyze cellular processes.
  9. Analyze the processes involved in inheritance of genes and genetic diversity.
  10. Compare and describe cell signaling and cell-cell interactions.
  11. Apply the foundations of biology to a specific set of demonstrable lab skills using live micro-organisms and equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.

Standards:

The student will meet the learning outcomes at the following level, degree or measurement:

  • Design, analyze and conduct safe experiments using correct scientific procedures and methodology.
  • Apply metric units when measuring for size, mass and volume.
  • Apply correct microscopic techniques for observing, identifying and comparing cells, tissue and organisms.
  • Distinguish between living organisms and non-living substances by physical, chemical and metabolic properties.
  • Identify the basic parts of atoms. Relate elements to the periodic table and describe how they influence chemical characteristics.
  • Apply the rules of dichotomy in classifying organisms. Use hierarchical and binomial classification among the kingdoms of Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia.
  • Recognize, compare and contrast the major types of plant and animal cells when observed microscopically.
  • Recognize and identify the major cell organelles such as membranes and describe their structures and functions.
  • Compare and contrast levels of organization by using physical, chemical and metabolic properties.
  • Describe the first and second Laws of Thermodynamics and relate to cellular energy, metabolic pathways and enzyme- substrate complexes.
  • Describe the processes of transcription and translation for protein synthesis and inheritance through DNA.
  • Describe and compare the processes of respiration and photosynthesis.
  • Compare and contrast the processes of meiosis and mitosis.
  • Apply the laws of probability as they relate to inheritance.
