No course equivalent to this one is being offered on campus at this point. Action Taken: Approved. THEA 2990 PERIOD STYLES IN DESIGN FOR THEATRE (3): Course Description and Prerequisites: Developed to provide an overview of social cultural, art, architecture, music, fashion, literature, and period styles and décor from antiquity to the modern age of western civilization applicable to theatrical stage design. Prerequisites: None. Justification: Currently our BFA in Theatre and Design Technology does not provide our students with an adequate visual history of design and historical aesthetics specifically applicable to theatrical design. We currently offer theatre history in a more generalized sense, in THEA2930 Theatre History and THEA2010 Dramatic Literature (both required of all theatre students). Both of these classes are an important component of their education but, do not provide (nor should they provide) the extensive study in the impact and visual history of art, the functions of architecture, the trends in social economic cultures, the power of political events, the evolution of fashion styles, the history of music styles and composition, etc. Understanding the ambience and cultural characteristics of selected periods will provide the students with an historical foundation to enhance their own creative process and their ability to conceptualize and communicate a design idea. Action Taken: Approved. WMST 3650 CONTEMPORARY US IMMIGRANT WOMEN WRITERS (3) [CH, D]: Course Description and Prerequisites: A study of contemporary American literature (fiction, autobiography, and poetry) by Mexican, Caribbean (Haitian and Dominican) and Arab immigrant women and daughters of immigrant parents. Film, other visual arts, and a range of essays enrich students’ analysis of the literary texts. Prerequisites: WMST1080, or WA, or junior standing. Justification: US Immigration Women Writers was successfully offered through Outreach in spring 2007 as a special topics (4500) course. We seek approval for giving it a recognized course number at the 3000 level and USP designations of CH and D. Outreach students do not have as many courses to choose from to fulfill USP requirements as on campus students. Giving the course its own number and USP designations CH and D (especially D) will help meet the need of Outreach Students. To better describe the content of the course for prospective students we would add Contemporary to the Title: Contemporary US Immigrant Women Writers. Action Taken: Approved.
