Internal Colonialism

Internal Colonialism: Conflict theorists use the term internal colonialism to describe the way in which a country's dominant group exploits the minority group for its economic advantage. The dominant group manipulates the social institutions to suppress minorities and deny them full access to their society's benefits. TERM 17

Assimilation

DEFINITION 17 The process by which the minority group is absorbed into the mainstream culture or dominant group. TERM 18

Population Transfer

DEFINITION 18 Population transfer is the movement of a large group of people from one region to another by state policy or international authority, most frequently on the basis of ethnicity or religion. There are two types of population transfer: indirect and direct. Indirect transfer is achieved by making life so miserable for members of a minoirty group that they leave voluntarily. Direct transfer occurs when a dominant group expels a minority. TERM 19

Multiculturalism/Pluralism

DEFINITION 19 Multiculturalism/Pluralism permits or encourages racial/ethnic variation. The minority groups are able to maintain their seperate identities, yet participate freely in the country's social institutions from education to politics. TERM 20
