Lecture Three: Lecture and Assignment 10 Points
Assignment due 25 January with extended discussion board due dates listed below.
Special note** You will participate in this highly “structured” group collaboration format
only one time this semester. The instructions are quite detailed yet the actual work is
neither lengthy nor highly demanding. Successful technology planning will require
teamwork and many times will require “team work at a distance.” This collaboration
activity demonstrates well researched strategies for fair and productive collaboration in
an online course setting. It will be difficult “NOT” to earn the full 10 points for this
assignment.
If you feel it is not possible for you to participate, please let me know via email by 22
January and I will assign the alternate individual written paper assignment for
Assignment Three. If you choose the written paper, please be sure to have a copy of the
APA manual 5th edition to use as the guide for writing your manuscript and making
proper citations of your references in your prose and in your bibliography.
Assignment Three Part I: Listen to your lecture. Read pages 51 - 53 in the Malitz
textbook. Read the first four screens of chapter 5 for the online version [

Read chapters 1, 2 & 3 in the Baule textbook.
Lecture for Assignment Three: “Why do we plan?”
Audio Lecture (Podcast)
Assignment Three Part 2: Part 2. Development of a Vision Statement:
Problem based collaborative learning activity. Post your work to the Bb Discussion
Forum (small and large group discussion forum will be utilized) using the guidelines and
requirements below.
In EDTC 6140 you will take part in both “full class” discussions and “small group”
discussions. You can locate each discussion forum within your Bb site within 4 days of
the initial due date for each discussion board assignment. For your small group
discussion, go to “group pages” and locate your name, click on that group’s forum, and
begin your post. You should start a new thread if you are the first to post. Each of your
discussion board requirements in EDTC 6140 will have a “window” of time where you
are required to make your particular number of posts. I will continually “lurk” and
monitor your posts during your “window” then will post appropriate points for your
assignment at the completion of each assignment. Remember to post your header with
your first and last name, your school or district, your position, and the county where

I do not score early work “early.” However if you have a question about an assignment and would like advice on a particular segment, please send me a note and I will read your work for you at any time. All scoring will be done beginning on the morning after an assignment is due. If your assignment is due for example on the 12th^ of January, then as long as your post and or digital drop box submission shows the date of the 12th^ of January and not the 13th^ of January, then you will be considered “on time” no matter if it is at 9AM or 11PM on the 12 th^ of January. Please of course feel free to hand in anything you like early if that works best for you and your organization and time management plan.

The Assignment for Part Two: Discussion and Collaboration Posts

Lots of detail here in the instructions this time however once you work through it once it will be second nature the next time, and, I will always have clear instructions just in case you need to refer to them.

  1. Small group discussion post. When working in your small group for this assignment, you will be assigned either an elementary, middle, or secondary level school as the focus of your discussion sessions for technology planning. I will choose these for you and at random. However, for the first discussion in your small group, each of you should locate and post a technology “mission” statement from a school in “any” grade level to start the discussion. If you are working for a school now that has a technology “mission” statement, you are good to go! Just ask for it and post it to your small group discussion board of course giving credit to the school or district as the author. If you must search for a mission statement, please be sure to give credit to the school where you retrieved the statement. You may need to contact a school in your area and ask if you might have a copy of their technology mission statement for a course you are taking at ECU. This initial post of a technology mission statement is due on 25 January. Now is a good time to go out and “make friends” so to speak in a school close to you so that you might have access to resources and information about technology planning in a school district. Note on Grading: Posting mission statement: 2 Points of 10
  2. Large group discussion post. Next, think about and discuss how technology decisions would affect different members of your school community from different perspectives. Discuss your role, your most recent role, or the role of an acquaintance, a parent, a student, a friend, or family member, teacher, principal, school secretary, library media specialist, or technology facilitator within a school or school district. (pick one or more, your choice.) If you are already in a school or school district, please discuss your role specifically there. Make note of the points below in your post and discussion with your classmates. Be sure to discuss “ Why” planning for technology at any grade level is important to you in this particular “role” within the school district. Your perspective must take into consideration the many facets of technology that might impact you on the job or as a person within the district (the role you have chosen to discuss). This second post should begin on 26 January and end on 29 January. This segment of time has two weekday opportunities and two weekend opportunities for you to post depending on when you prefer to post. This is a “discussion” so I ask that you post at least two times Slagter van Tryon 2

3.(from above) “Comments and suggestions can be made for improving or clarifying the statement and the “second person” on the list should write the second version of the vision statement if any changes are suggested.” If no comments or suggestions are noted for you then this person’s job will be to send me a short reflection (about 5 sentences) via email communicating your thoughts about “group problem solving” online. Note on Grading: 2 Points of 10.

  1. (from above) “The “4th person” listed in the group will be responsible for posting this final vision statement to the large group discussion board including the names of each person and each person’s “stats” for your group (basically a cut and past of the information from your small group discussion board to the large group discussion board). Note on Grading: Post from small group discussion board to large group discussion board.” 2 Points of 10.
  2. The responsibility of the “third person” listed in your small group will be to send me a short reflection (about 5 sentences) via email communicating your thoughts about “group problem solving” online. Note on Grading: Short reflection 2 Points of 10.
  3. The final 2 Points of 10 will be given simply for reading this assignment document and making all of your posts “on time.” Wondering what to include in your large group discussion posts here and throughout the course? As I read and participate in your online discussions, I will look for the following elements within the discussion:  Cultural or social characteristics that emerge in your conversation.  Potential solutions to problems that may be present in technology planning  Your responses to another person detailing how his or her post has helped you  Mentions of specific physical needs, perhaps from consideration of the “student” member of the team.  Identifiable needs based on teacher versus learner.  Roles being represented with equity Slagter van Tryon 4
