1) Place the ruler on the edge of the table so that 10 cm extends beyond the edge of the table. Place
your thumb on the ruler just behind the 10 cm mark. Gently pluck the end of the ruler with your other
hand. What did you see? What did you hear? Record your observations below.
2) Move the ruler forward a little so that 12 cm extends beyond the edge of the table. Place your thumb
just below the 12 cm mark. Gently pluck the end of the ruler with your other hand. What did you see?
What did you hear? Record your observations below.
3) Now place the ruler so that 18 cm extends beyond the table and repeat the above activity. Then
repeat the process with 22 cm extending. Record your observations below.

Discuss your observations and the two following questions with your group and record your answers below. [Explain]

  1. How did what you see when you plucked the ruler change as you increased the length of the ruler that extended beyond the end of the table?
  2. How did what you hear when you plucked the ruler change as you increased the length of the ruler that extended beyond the end of the table? Part II: [Extend]
  3. Place the meter stick so that 75 cm are extending beyond the edge of the table. Place the palm of your hand just behind the 75 cm mark. Pluck the ruler with your other hand and then quickly slide the ruler back onto the table until just 25 cm extends beyond the edge. Repeat this process several times until you can observe changes in both what you see and what you hear. Record your observations below.
  4. The word “pitch” describes how high or low a sound is. Discuss the following questions with your group and record the answer below. What connections can you make between what you saw and what you heard? What do you think might affect the pitch of a sound?
