Stud I.D. ____________ PSYC 202 - Psychological Research II Exam 2 – Take Home DUE: Thursday, 3/19/2009 by 4:00 pm STAT Chaps 8 & 9 METH 13 and Power Notes Instructions: This is a take-home exam. Please do your own work, don’t get help from anyone else (except Dr J or the Graduate Teaching Assistant), and don’t help someone else. If you show your work, and/or copy and paste the appropriate sections from the analyses from SPSS, you may receive partial credit for incorrect answers. Please do not print out the full output on SPSS. You will write on this exam for some answers, type some answers, and use a WebCT for the Multiple Choice answers. Please put your Student I.D. on the exam itself and on the extra pages you turn in ( not your name – 2 points will be deducted for writing your name on anything ). All results paragraphs should be typed, in APA-style, and any graphs should be computer generated. Good luck! Multiple Choice: The multiple choice questions are on WebCT. Please log on to the Portal Page and click on WebCT at the top. You may take the quiz on WebCT twice and the highest score will be used. Those questions are worth 15 points. (15 points).
1. (20 points) This experiment was modeled after that of Triplett (1897) who conducted the first social psychology experiment. An experimenter gave a wheel cranking pretest to 40 fifth graders. Using the results of the pretest, s/he formed 2 groups of participants from 12 pairs of subjects that had been perfectly matched on cranking ability (crankiness). Then individuals in one group were tested alone using fishing reels. Participants in the other group reeled together (in pairs) under conditions of direct competition. The number of yards of line reeled in during a 30 second time period was recorded for each subject. The participant who reeled the most line got to keep the reel and spend the afternoon fishing (no school). The data follow. Test ed with Tested Alone: Co mpe titio n: a. Set up

2. (15 points) A developmental researcher has a technique that s/he believes will affect the age at which children begin speaking. In the experimenter’s locale, the average age of uttering the first word is 13 months (μ = 13 therefore set Test Value to 13 on SPSS). The standard deviation is unknown. The researcher applies his/her technique to a random sample of 16 children. The average age (in months) that each child utters their first word follows: Age at first word: 12 10 9.5 11.5 14 13.5 10.5 8 11 13 10 14.5 10 11.5 12 10 a. Set up the hypothesis test: b. Analyze the data and write in the obtained value and the p value: c. Record your decision (reject null or do not reject): d. Type an APA-style paragraph describing the results, and the conclusions (do NOT include the graph; write descriptive statistics in the paragraph instead). 3. (4 points) What are the 95 % confidence limits on μ for the data in number 2 above? 4. (15 points) A personnel director at an electronics firm employs hundreds of individuals to assemble miniature components for the computer industry. The work requires extremely fine eye-hand coordination; in addition, the government requires that the corporation be a drug-free work environment. Therefore, routine blood and urine tests are given to all employees randomly. Part of the test includes a screening for the presence of THC (the active agent in marijuana).
Stud I.D. ____________ The personnel director wishes to know if smoking marijuana really affects performance on tasks requiring fine motor coordination. To test the effects of marijuana on work performance, s/he administered a standard test of motor dexterity to 30 employees who had recently tested positive for THC and admitted to long-time marijuana use. The employee scores were compared to the industry standards, namely, μ = 100 and σ = 10. The results indicate that the average performance for the 30 employees was a score of 96.5 with a standard deviation of 15. 3a. Set up the hypothesis test: b. Analyze the data and record the obtained value: c. Record your decision (reject null or not): d. Type an APA-style paragraph describing the results, and the conclusions (do NOT include a graph, include descriptive statistics in text instead).
5. (20 points) Drugs used in treating schizophrenia typically block the receptors for dopamine on neurons in the brain. (Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, which, when released by the axons of one nerve, inhibits the firing of the next nerve.) This led to the idea that schizophrenia occurs when too much dopamine is produced in the brain. An experimenter attempted to test the hypothesis. He/she collected the following data on the amount of dopamine produced in a group of subjects diagnosed as schizophrenic and a group of subjects that came in for a different problem, and were not diagnosed as schizophrenic. The data were obtained via a simple blood test for dopamine. Non - Schizophrenics:

7. (9 points) Dr. Hennessey is planning a study in which s/he will evaluate the effect of exposure of patients to a new treatment plan. Extensive prior research suggests that no treatment results in an improvement in symptoms of 3.5 with a standard deviation of 6. Dr. Hennessey expects a higher level of improvement in symptoms by at least 4 points, and s/he plans to run a one-sample t -test (with Ho: μ = 3.6). Please SHOW your WORK! a.. What is the effect size in question? b. What is the value of delta if the size of the sample of participants is 10? c. What is the power of the test? d. How many subjects do they need to have at least an 80% chance of success? e. How many subjects do they need to have at least a 95% chance of success?
