the Graduate Teaching Assistant), and don’t help someone else.
If you show your work, and/or copy and paste the appropriate sections from the analyses from SPSS,
you may receive partial credit for incorrect answers. Please do not print out the full output on SPSS.
You will write on this exam for some answers, type some answers, and use a WebCT for the
Multiple Choice answers.
Please put your Student I.D. on the exam itself and on the extra pages you turn in (not your name –
2 points will be deducted for writing your name on anything).
All results paragraphs should be typed, in APA-style, and any graphs should be computer generated.

Multiple Choice: The multiple choice questions are on WebCT. Please log on to the Portal Page and click
on WebCT at the top. You may take the quiz on WebCT twice and the highest score will be used. Those
questions are worth 15 points. (15 points).
1. (20 points) This experiment was modeled after that of Triplett (1897) who conducted the first
social psychology experiment. An experimenter gave a wheel cranking pretest to 40 fifth graders.
Using the results of the pretest, s/he formed 2 groups of participants from 12 pairs of subjects that
had been perfectly matched on cranking ability (crankiness). Then individuals in one group were
tested alone using fishing reels. Participants in the other group reeled together (in pairs) under
conditions of direct competition. The number of yards of line reeled in during a 30 second time
period was recorded for each subject. The participant who reeled the most line got to keep the reel
and spend the afternoon fishing (no school). The data follow.

2. (15 points) A developmental researcher has a technique that s/he believes will affect the age at which children begin speaking. In the experimenter’s locale, the average age of uttering the first word is 13 months (μ = 13 therefore set Test Value to 13 on SPSS). The standard deviation is unknown. Therefore, routine blood and urine tests are given to all employees randomly. Part of the test includes a screening for the presence of THC (the active agent in marijuana).

To test the effects of marijuana on work performance, s/he administered a standard test of motor dexterity to 30 employees who had recently tested positive for THC and admitted to long-time marijuana use. 5. (20 points) Drugs used in treating schizophrenia typically block the receptors for dopamine on neurons in the brain. (Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, which, when released by the axons of one nerve, inhibits the firing of the next nerve.) This led to the idea that schizophrenia occurs when too much dopamine is produced in the brain. An experimenter attempted to test the hypothesis. He/she collected the following data on the amount of dopamine produced in a group of subjects diagnosed as schizophrenic and a group of subjects that came in for a different problem, and were not diagnosed as schizophrenic.
